A vacancy has arisen for a Squadron Leader (Flying(Any)) to serve as 11 Squadron Uncle at RAF Coningsby on Full Time Reserve Service (Home Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS) with a proposed start date being 1 November 2020. 

The Squadron Uncle is responsible to OC XI(F) Squadron for a number of tasks to provide additional capacity amongst the Squadron flight commanders. Primarily the role is to maintain the welfare and mental resilience of Squadron personnel whilst also being responsible for the management of Squadron in support and alongside that already covered by other Squadron flight commanders. The position will also provide continuity for Squadron business by acting as Deputy Squadron Commander and Senior Subordinate Commander when the Squadron deploys. 

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Delivering a welfare and mental resilience programme and providing pastoral care across the Squadron. First port of call for all welfare related advice and support. 
  • Supporting home-based and deployed operations, paying particular attention to the welfare support to Squadron personnel and their families. 
  • Coordination of the Readiness and Preparation of all Squadron personnel assisted by Squadron management and HR. This includes ensuring all relevant courses are booked and day to day currencies such as RAFFT are monitored. 
  • Acting as Duty Exec when required and, if appropriately qualified, providing supervision of flying in the role of RAF Coningsby Duty Commander flying (DCF) as required when XI(F) Squadron hold the duty. 
  • Acting as Squadron point of contact for Honorary Members, Squadron Affiliates and the XI(F) Squadron Association. 
  • Acting as the Squadron ambassador for all history-related business including the custodianship of all Squadron memorabilia. 
  • In conjunction with the relevant 1RO, supervising the professional development of Junior Officers on the Squadron. 
  • When required, providing oversight and guidance to ProjOs in arranging Force Development (FD) and Adventurous Training (AT). 
  • Provision oversight of ceremonial events in consultation with the Squadron Warrant Officer.
  • Must either have been, or currently be a Squadron Leader (Flying(Any)) or a Flight Lieutenant (Flying(Any)) who is eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3393 Vol 1 and AP 7000. All Promotions will be ratified by means of a Promotion Board.
  • Completed the IOD 4/5
  • Extensive Staff Officer Experience
  • Experience as a Fast-Jet Squadron Flight Commander
  • Completed the Flying Authoriser Course within the last 5 years
  • Completed Mental Health First Aider (MHFA) for the Armed Forces Course
  • Casualty Notification Officer / Visiting Officer qualified
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Advisor/Practitioner qualified
  • Human Factors facilitator qualified

Unless already commissioned in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be commissioned in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service. 

The appointment is on Full Time Reserve Service (Home Commitment) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 Chapter 16 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period of 5 years. 

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board. Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case by case basis. 

Candidates who have been out of regular or reserve service for more than 5 years may be considered for this appointment. Prior approval must be sought from the relevant Branch & Trade Advisor to confirm current and past experience prior to being invited to interview. 

Regular Service Applicants. Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying. 

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT). Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required). 

Annual Salary and Leave. Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces. Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760

Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS(HC) TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB.
