This is superb opportunity to fill a short term (9 months) SO1 role on ADC, VTOD or VERR as the SO1 Experimentation Coherence (SO1 BOLD QUEST) leader.  You will work in a dynamic Joint HQ and deploy on Ex Bold Quest. 

90 RSDs are available for an immediate start. The role could be conducted with a mixture of Office/WfH working. Precise working days and hours would be agreed between the individual and the CoC, although the Command Gp’s normal battle rhythm is predominantly 0800-1800. It is essential the successful individual can support and attend the Exercise dates detailed below.

SO1 BOLD QUEST is a new non-enduring role required to provide staff lead to allow DJW to meet directed responsibilities regarding participation in the US BOLD QUEST series.

This role is essential to both promoting the BOLD QUEST (BQ) series across Defence and cohering UK participation. With a lead staff officer, JW will ensure that the UK derives maximum benefit for experimentation with partners and allies.

This new role requires an experienced planner adept at networking across multiple stakeholders, UK, and multinational, and building common purpose to secure the UK’s desired outcomes from participation. In addition, the post holder will be required to lead on the J1-J4 support, while also providing leadership for additional supporting J functions.

As SO1 BOLD QUEST, this role will directly represent the United Kingdom, mirroring respective PN representatives.

Responsibilities:

Planning Stage

Work with the US Joint Staffs J6, BDSUS staff, FLCs and across JW to:

  • Promote BOLD QUEST opportunity and cohere UK contribution/ input to the exercise
  • Maintain close liaison and lead planning meetings with the US BOLD QUEST lead and UK participants.
  • Liaise with US POC and BDSUS as required wrt arrivals, diplomatic clearances of UK participants
  • BPT support and command the arrivals plan, transportation plot and sequencing of arrivals activity and other J1/4 related activity.
  • BPT to support and direct additional J5-9 functions when required.
  • Liaise closely with DDC and SJFHQ Joint Effects Team wrt STRATCOM messaging.
  • Provide regular planning updates to Assistant Head Analysis & Assurance and support briefs to 1* - 3* stakeholders.
  • Produce relevant staff work to support the UK’s involvement in BOLD QUEST.
  • Support integration between BQ series and additional US led experimentation series for UK Defence (i.e: Project CONVERGENCE, Project OVERMATCH, Advanced Battle Management System).

Execution (including deployment to USA)

  • Ensure all arrangements (as described above) are in place to facilitate smooth arrival of UK SP to exercise location. 
  • Ensure that UK activities are coordinated internally and with the host organisation.
  • BPT support DVD events, including hosting of UK DVDs.

Post Event

  • Conduct Post-Event Review.
  • Produce Lessons Identified for future BOLD QUEST series participation.

Directorate of Joint Warfare sits within Joint Force Development within UK Strategic Command (UKStratCom). The vision of Joint Force Development is to be the thought-leadership engine that gives UK Defence the edge on a global stage.  The role of the Directorate of Joint Warfare is to ensure that the Joint Force is ready for operations through operational level force development, military exercises, contingency reporting, and lessons learnt. 

Must be an OF4 of any specialisation. OF3 applicants with a recommend for the next higher rank in their most recent OJAR will be considered.

Must be serving as a member of the Reserve Forces or have served with the Regular Forces.

The SO1 BOLD QUEST should ideally have broad military staff experience and knowledge and be comfortable working in a joint environment and with Allies and Partners. The following criteria would usefully supplement the core competences:

  •  Experience of joint operations and/or joint exercises.
  •  An understanding of how joint level training is planned and delivered.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and concisely verbally and in writing.

Candidates must liaise with WO1 Shawn Bailey MBE before they follow the application process for their Service, albeit some processes are joint.

Much of the work can be conducted from home, however precise working days and hours would be agreed between the individual and the CoC (JW normal operating hours is predominantly 0800-1800). The appointed officer is authorised to claim travel and subsistence and to have access to service accommodation for assigned exercises and associated meetings when remote conferencing is not practicable, as per TaCoS.
