The 2IC will deputise for the Commanding officer (CO) in his/her absence. The 2IC will also be the senior Army Reserve Officer when the CO is a Regular Officer. In this situation the 2IC’s primary responsibility first and foremost is to ensure he/she is the COs Subject Matter Expert (SME) on all Army Reserve specific policies, procedures and direction.
In addition, the 2IC must ensure he/she maintains a thorough and intimate knowledge of all issues, concerns and/or challenges within all Sub-Units and departments. He/she must also understand all key personalities roles and responsibilities within the battalion Headquarters (HQ).
The 2IC is also ultimately responsible for all G7 activity. He/she will liaise directly with the XO and the training team to ensure all activities are conducted strictly in accordance with the COs intent and direction.
The 2IC must ensure:
1. The XO and training team are appropriately resourced to plan and deliver training effectively.
2. All training activities are planned in detail and if necessary rehearsed, iot make the best use of the limited time available.
3. All training activities are imaginative, stimulating and in keeping with current Battle procedures.
4. Conceptual training for Army Reserve officers is targeted in way to set them up for success in their future appointments (Both as Staff officers and Command).
Officers Mess - The 2IC will also act as the Mess President in the absence of the CO.
