Vacancy detail

A vacancy has arisen for a Sergeant (TG5) GTM to serve as SNCO Support Engineering Section at MoD St Athan on Full Time Reserve Service (Home Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date being 03 January 2023.

This post is currently located in an establishment that is part of the Defence Technical Training Change Programme; therefore, it is likely to be subject to relocation to an alternative MOD site by end of March 2024.  Under current plans the preferred site for Defence Technical training is MOD Lyneham.

As the SNCO GTM you will be responsible to the TM SES for the supervision of SES (GTM) and the completion of all associated tasking, to include maintenance, modification and repair of Airfield Support Equipment (ASE), to include Mechanical Transport (MT) and Ground Support Equipment (GSE) as well as Ground Training Aids specific to the training environment. You will be specifically responsible for:

a.    Advising TM SES of any problems that arise with respect to manning that may adversely affect the efficiency of the SES.

b.    The supervision of SES and the completion of its associated tasking, to include maintenance, modification and repair of Airfield Support Equipment (ASE) and Ground Training Aids whilst maintaining all relevant maintenance or repair documentation.

c.    Maintaining a register of all GTAs on the excel spreadsheet, including electrical equipment, and ensuring that these items are maintained on time. Any defects are to be correctly documented and the repair process prioritised and carried out in a timely fashion.

d.    Ensuring the maintenance, modification and rectification of Green Fleet MT vehicles is undertaken within the current regulations in liaison with the Airfield Support Capability Integrated Logistics Operations Centre (ASC ILOC) and the MOD St Athan MTO’s fleet management protocols.

e.    Ensuring the maintenance, modification and rectification of ASE is properly controlled and maintained via JAMES control systems and GTA/Racking Maintenance Spreadsheets.

f.    Supervising all SES mechanical Service and Civilian personnel, ensuring that they acquaint themselves with all relevant and up to date orders and procedures and sign their authorisations as having done so on arrival and annually.

g.    Correct preparation of mechanical items for return to 2nd/3rd/4th Line, including all relevant documentation.

The maintenance and cleanliness of the SES workshops and associated equipment used in the performance of your duties.
h.    Complying with current Health & Safety procedures, fire regulations, TPM, Unit Quality Policy and other applicable regulations in the execution of their duty.

i.    Controlling F&L and COSHH within own work area using data.

j.    Developing and mentoring the SES GTM personnel in your area of responsibility. Adopt the full responsibilities of the TM SES in their absence.

  • Must either have been, or currently be, a Sgt (Gen Tech Mech) or Cpl (Gen Tech Mech) who is eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 2 Leaflet 560 and AP 3376 Vol 1.
  • If legacy Trade Group 5 Gen Mech GSE must have successfully completed assimilation training, been awarded X500 and gained sufficient experience on MT to allow a Vehicle Inspection ‘Q’ Annotation to be gained if not already held.
  • If legacy Trade Group 6 MT Fitter must have successfully completed assimilation training, been awarded X500 and gained sufficient experience to be able to manage and supervise the maintenance and repair of GSE.
  • Must hold a clean UK driving licence.

The successful applicant will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

  • Q-D-GS Module 1.
  • Q-D-H.
  • Q-D-H(A).
  • Q-D-MATT.
  • Q-D-L.
  • Q-D-MHE(CB) – Counterbalance.
  • Q-HSW-MS.
  • Q-HSW-RISK.
  • JAMES Leading Maintainer.

The closing date for applications is 4 Dec 2022 and interviews will take place week commencing 15 Dec 22.

Unless already enlisted in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be enlisted in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service.

The appointment is on Full Time Reserve Service (Home Commitment) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 Chapter 16 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period up to 31 Mar 24.

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board.  Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case by case basis.

Regular Service Applicants.  Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Profession and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.

Ex-service candidates who have been administratively discharged through the QR1027 process will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a).

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Transition between TCoS.  Personnel taking this appointment from other TCoS should consider the impact on any accrued entitlements, such as leave, resettlement etc and should seek specialist guidance where required as certain entitlements are TCoS specific and may not be retained or transferred on transition between TCoS. 

Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserve personnel can request FW arrangements with their line manager.  Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT).  Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS.  The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

Annual Salary and Leave.  Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces.  Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.

Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS (HC) TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB.
