A vacancy has arisen for a Corporal (Any) to serve as JNCO Virtual Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO) at Headquarters RAF Recruiting and Selection (R&S) at RAF Cranwell on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date 07 November 2022 (or earlier).

RAF R&S’ Mission is to attract and select for training the diversity, quantity and quality of people necessary to sustain RAF operational capability.  JNCO Virtual AFCO (Reserves) will work within HQ R&S Reserves Recruiting Team to support Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF) Sqns to select and recruit Part-Time Volunteer Reservists (PTVRs).

Specifically, upon successful completion of the RAF Recruiting Course at RAF Cranwell (unless already completed), JNCO Virtual AFCO will work within the RAF Reserves Virtual AFCO will be responsible through SNCO Reserves Recruiting to SO2 Reserves Recruiting for the following aspects of Recruitment and Selection:

  • Ensuring all procedures and processes are consistently applied in accordance with AP3391 to maintain the throughput of potential RAF Reserves Officer and Other Ranks recruits.
  • Processing new RAF Reserves applications received by the Reserves Virtual AFCO through the online system; conducting effective Candidate Relationship Management with candidates to facilitate a positive candidate experience for all applicants.
  • Proactively guiding candidates through the recruiting process and offer initial trade counselling. Acting as the initial focal point for new applicants’ queries, responding in a courteous, friendly and timely manner.
  • Checking all Reserves Virtual AFCO applications against extant eligibility criteria, processing applicants’ details on the Recruitment IT System and liaising with RAuxAF squadron recruiters and other key stakeholders to effect the timely hand-off of eligible cases to the most suitable receiving unit.
  • Liaising on a daily basis with RAuxAF sqn recruiters and candidates to resolve a wide range of recruiting enquiries in a professional, informed and timely manner.
  • Ensuring the maintenance of accurate and comprehensive records on all Reserve applicants in accordance with current SOPs. Conducting Pre-Attestation event checks, liaising with the Area Reserves Recruiting Force and RAuxAF staffs to correct any anomalies.
  • Maintaining effective communication with RAuxAF squadron recruiting staff to ensure the RAF Reserves Immediate Recruiting Brief (IRB) which details real-time role vacancy information is kept up to date.
  • Processing specialist documentation including RAF Reserves Bespoke Training Waivers, Executive Medical Waivers, Trade Aptitude Reports as required.
  • Acting as a Reserve subject matter expert for the Recruiting IT System, providing advice and guidance to RAuxAF recruiting staffs as required in consultation with the R&S Digital Innovation, Systems Management & Analytics (DISMA) team.
  • Ensuring a range of daily/monthly/yearly data relating to Reserves applications, hand-offs, attestations and other statistics is accurately recorded primarily using MS Excel.
  • Maintaining a Capita Medical Booking account to support RAuxAF squadron recruiters in the event of associated queries and monitor appointment availability.
  • Administering the allocation of new RAuxAF recruiters to the RAF Recruiting Course and, subject to experience, presenting Reserves specific elements of the course. Supporting new recruiters to facilitate RAuxAF visits as part of their Workplace Training Programme.
  • Assisting with the planning, administration and delivery of regular remote Reserves workshops and annual conferences at RAF Cranwell.
  • Routinely liaising with key Stakeholders including Reserves Personnel Management Cell, R&S Policy staffs, R&S Marketing staffs, Recruiting Force and Recruiting Operations staff, Capita Medical administration team, Department of Occupational Medicine and Teleperformance UK on a range of Reserves recruiting matters.
  • Represent the HQ R&S Reserves Recruiting Team at routine stakeholder visits/meetings across UK in accordance with Reserve Recruiting Team stakeholder engagement plan. Visits are aimed at ensuring a broad awareness of pertinent issues and initiatives and maintaining broad recruiting competencies such as Defence Aptitude Testing delivery and Selection Interviewing.  Some visits will involve overnight stays away from Parent Unit. 
  • Providing support to SNCO Reserves Recruiting in the management and general administration of the RRT which may include deputising for the SNCO RRT during periods of absence subject to experience.

Must either have been, or currently be, a Corporal - Any Profession.     

  • Confident and clear verbal skills, able to engage effectively, supportively and enthusiastically with civilian applicants.
  • Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Able to prioritise a busy workload.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Able to build effective working relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Good IT skills (including MS Office applications particularly MS Excel).
  • Must be prepared to travel to undertake visits to RAuxAF sqns throughout UK.
  • Possess a full UK driving licence.
  • Have recent RAF recruiting experience. Dependant on time out of recruiting the selected candidate may be required to undertake the RAF Recruiting Course.
  • Cert RP qualified.
  • A sound working knowledge of current RAuxAF sqn laydown and roles.
  • An understanding of PTVR TCoS or experience as a PTVR.
  • Experience of working with external partner agencies.
  • Experience working within a HQ environment.

Unless already enlisted in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be enlisted in the Royal Air Force Reserves with a liability for call-out for permanent service.

The appointment is on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period of up to 31 Mar 25.

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board.  Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case-by-case basis.

Regular Service Applicants.  Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Profession and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.

Ex-service candidates who have been administratively discharged through the QR1027 process will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a).

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Of particular note is reference to the ‘Effect of Re-employment’ on Commutation and, for those leaving on a ‘preserved’ pension, the Resettlement Grant.

Transition between TCoS.  Personnel taking this appointment from other TCoS should consider the impact on any accrued entitlements, such as leave, resettlement etc and should seek specialist guidance where required as certain entitlements are TCoS specific and may not be retained or transferred on transition between TCoS. 

Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserve personnel can request FW arrangements with their line manager.  Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT).  Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS.  The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

Annual Salary and Leave.  Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces.  Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.

Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS(LC/HC)/ADC TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB. However, due to a severe shortage, it is unlikely that accommodation will be available at RAFC Cranwell.
