A vacancy has arisen for a Warrant Officer (Any Trade) to serve as the Squadron Warrant Officer at No. 502 (Ulster) Squadron on ADC, PTVR or VeRR Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 1 Feb 23 (or earlier) depending on candidate availability. 

Prospective candidates should be aware that No 502 Squadron is located in Northern Ireland and one of six General Service Support (GSS) squadrons that are dispersed across the United Kingdom (UK) and brigaded under Headquarters No. 2 Group (Reserves).  The Squadron manages a cohort of Part-Time Volunteer Reserves who are employed across a range of RAF ground trades.  The role of the Squadron is to provide trained personnel to augment the Royal Air Force in the delivery of military tasks both in the UK and overseas. 

As the Squadron Warrant Officer for No. 502 (Ulster) Sqn, the post incumbent will be responsible to the Officer Commanding, through the Executive Officer.

In fulfilling the role of Squadron Warrant Officer, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing Squadron discipline, performance and welfare of all personnel, taking appropriate action as required.  The successful candidate will be expected to work 3 days each week at the Squadron Headquarters, incorporating attendance at Wednesday evenings and one weekend duty period of collective training each month. Specific responsibilities for the Squadron Warrant Officer include:

  • As a member of the Sqn Execs team the Sqn WO contributes to the leadership of the Sqn acting as a mentor and senior enlisted representative on Sqn / Stn / Gp level meetings.
  • Overseeing all areas of Sqn discipline and performance, ensuring good order and behaviour from all personnel, taking appropriate action when required.
  • Oversee the implementation and control of 502 Sqn’s Continual Improvement and Health and Safety arrangements.
  • Overseeing the provision of all Squadron Welfare services and facilities.
  • Overseeing the planning and co-ordination of all Ceremonial events.
  • Overseeing the planning and co-ordination of all external visits and inspections.
  • Overseeing the administration and processing of all areas of Recruitment.
  • Overseeing the planning, co-ordination and attendance at all external recruitment events.
  • Lead on all Sqn Social Media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
  • Mentoring and developing all Sqn SNCOs.
  • Must either have been, or currently be, a Warrant Officer or a Flight Sergeant eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 2 Leaflet 560 and AP 3376 Vol 1. All Promotions will be ratified by means of a Promotion Board.
  • Must possess a good working knowledge of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force
  • Must have experience of providing support to Royal Air Force operations and/or exercises in the UK and overseas (or similar experience serving with sister Services).
  • Must have successfully completed a period of out-of-area mobilised or operational deployed service with the Royal Air Force, or Royal Auxiliary Air Force Reserve, or with a sister Service.
  • Must have experience and a working knowledge of all aspects of Service Discipline.
  • Must have experience and a working knowledge of the provision of Welfare within the RAF.
  • Have practical knowledge and experience of the drill and ceremonial requirements within the RAF.
  • Have experience as a Part-Time Volunteer Reservist (PTVR) or have experience of supporting PTVRs.
  • Have practical knowledge and skill to exploit Microsoft Office.

Closing date for applications is 30 Sep 22 and interviews will be scheduled shortly afterwards, depending upon applicant status.

Unless already enlisted in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be enlisted in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service.

The appointment is on either Additional Duties Commitment, Part Time Volunteer Reserve or Volunteer Ex-Regular Reserve TCoS and will be for an initial period of 4 years.

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board.  Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case-by-case basis.

Candidates who have been out of regular or reserve service for more than 5 years may be considered for this appointment.  Prior approval must be sought from the relevant Branch & Trade Advisor to confirm current and past experience prior to being invited to interview.

Applicants of an equivalent rank from sister Services may apply but will only be accepted into RAFR service if an appropriate branch/trade sponsor can be identified to sponsor the applicant.  Branch/trade sponsor approval must be agreed before the interview.

Regular Service Applicants.  Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.

Ex-service candidates who have been administratively discharged will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a).  

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Transition between TCoS.  Personnel taking this appointment from other TCoS should consider the impact on any accrued entitlements, such as leave, resettlement etc and should seek specialist guidance where required as certain entitlements are TCoS specific and may not be retained or transferred on transition between TCoS. 

Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserves personnel are able to request FW arrangements with their line manager.  Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT).  Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS.  The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

Annual Salary and Leave.  Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces.  Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.

Accommodation.  Personnel serving on FTRS(LC/HC)/ADC TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB.
