A vacancy has arisen for a Squadron Leader (RAF Regt) to serve as 2623 Headquarters Command SO2 (Officer Commanding No 2623 RAuxAF Squadron) at RAF Honington on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment), ADC or PTVR Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with a start date being not before 24 July 2021. 

The holder of the post will command a RAF Force Protection Auxiliary Field Sqn with an establishment of 14 permanent staff (12 x FTRS and 2 x Regular personnel) plus 89 Part-Time Volunteer Reserve (PTVR). 

The specific responsibilities of the Officer Commanding include: 

  • Command of 2623 Sqn, ensuring efficient running of the Unit and appropriate levels of day-to-day supervision, welfare support and management. 
  • Promote an inclusive culture within the Sqn to help attract/recruit, train, support and develop PTVR personnel. 
  • Act as Senior subordinate commander for all 2623 Sqn personnel and granted the powers of punishment in accordance with QR1069. 
  • Ensure compliance with extant governance policy by maintaining up to date documentation, including management plans, supervisory care directives and risk assessments, ensuring the efficient conduct and safety of all 2623 Sqn personnel. 
  • Achievement and maintenance of the 2623 Sqn delivery/management plan, including safe and progressive training. 
  • Management of the Sqn establishment through effective recruitment, training, retention and employment activity in order to build FP Reserve capabilities to support Whole Force output. 
  • Maintain focus on Whole Force output as well as demonstrating value for money through efficient use of time, money and resources and the conduct of financial activity within delegated authority limits. 
  • Leading 2623 Sqn’s Employer Engagement and Employer Support activity. 
  • Maintenance of effective relationships with key stakeholder organisations, including: 7 RAF FP Wg, Reserves HQ, East Anglia Reserve Force and Cadets Association, RAF Honington and the Sqn Honorary Air Commodore. 

  • Must either have been, or currently be, a Squadron Leader (RAF Regt) or a Flight Lieutenant (RAF Regt) who is eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3393 Vol 1 and AP 7000. All Promotions will be ratified by means of a Promotion Board. 
  • Have a broad experience of Air Force Protection related operational activities and training. 
  • Command experience at OF2. 
  • SA(B)90 or SA(B)18 qualified. 
  • Experience of the Land Environment Safety system, including training risk management through the F7548 process. 
  • Whether serving RAFR or ex-regular, applicants must have completed a period of mobilised or operational service.
  • Command experience at OF3 or higher. 
  • ICSC (Air) or IOD4 qualified, with HQ staff experience. 
  • Land Environment Safety Officer qualified. 
  • SA(A)90 or SA(A)18 qualified. 
  • Possess Air FP and training related competencies. 
  • Experience of Reserve Forces and experience of training and supporting RAF Part Time Volunteer Service personnel. 
  • FP Executive Course or FP C2 Training Course.

The closing date for applications is 23 May 2021 

Unless already commissioned in the RAF Reserves the successful applicant will be required to be commissioned in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service. 

The appointment is on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 Chapter 16 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period of 2 years with the possibility to extend for an additional 2 years. This will be subject to satisfactory performance in appointment. 

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board. Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case by case basis. 

Candidates who have been out of regular or reserve service for more than 5 years may be considered for this appointment. Prior approval must be sought from the relevant Branch & Trade Advisor to confirm current and past experience prior to being invited to interview. 

Regular Service Applicants. Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying. 

Ex-service candidates who have been administratively discharged will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a).

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserves personnel are able to request FW arrangements with their line manager. Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage. 

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT). Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT (Mod 1), RAFFT and Regiment Annual Fitness Test (RAFT). The successful applicant will be expected to complete and pass all IRT modules, RAFFT and RAFT within 4 months of commencing employment. 

Annual Salary and Leave. Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces. Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760

Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS(LC) TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB.
