A vacancy has arisen for a Squadron leader Aircrew (Fg) (ME)) or WSO (ME) to serve as XO 622 Sqn at RAF Brize Norton on FTRS (LC) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of  or earlier 30 November 2022, or earlier subject to candidates status.

The 622 Squadron Executive Officer (XO) is an integral part of the Sqn management team and is to attend all meetings, committees and presentations as are necessary to fulfil the role and is directly responsible to OC 622 Squadron (OC 622 Sqn).   

Post Holder’s Task/Responsibilities 

As XO, you are responsible for all aspects of running 622 Sqn as directed by OC 622 Sqn. When required you are to deputise for OC 622 Sqn and to cover, as a minimum the following duties: 

  • Progressing the selection of Reserve Aircrew (RA) and Flying Support (FS) personnel to meet establishment vacancies following consultation with their previous Sqn/Section Commanders.
  • Liaising with the relevant Sqn Ops for the training and allocation of tasks to individual RA.
  • Monitoring, and maintaining records of essential training RA and FS must achieve to obtain their annual bounty i.e. MOD1, RAF FT, CR aircraft category (instrument rating for pilots), minimum attendance of 15 days iaw AP 3392 Vol 7. Ensuring that reserve service day extension requests are processed in good time. 
  • Monitoring, and maintaining records of AMTW, PME (Civilian Class 1 Medical), Inoculations, and Pool Drills, and all other non-flying related BCRs.
  • Advising Sqn Cdr’s on matters concerning RAuxAF policy and administration.
  • Under the FTRS (LC) contract, supporting the RAF Brize Norton Sqns whenever appropriate.
  • Administration of 622 Sqn including compliance with current RAF regulations and Reserve Forces Administrative Instructions.Including as a minimum:
  1. Contributing to the development of the RA and FS call-out plan.
  2. Timely and accurate submission of statistical returns.
  3. Preparation of submissions for honours and awards.
  4. Fulfil RO duties for the 622 Sqn WO, Adj and JNCO HR.
  5. Reserves ITT/F214 returns.
  6. FGen and mobilisations.
  7. Day to day Sqn admin including, F540, establishment management, Sqn Pers Pay and T&S authorisation.
  8. Maintain the affiliations with the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators and other military units (eg HMS MERSEY).

Additional Responsibilities 

You are also responsible for ensuring that the Sqn HQ personnel support an Engaged Total Safety Culture in order to help the Sqn with the implementation and direction of the AM FHQ Air Safety Management Plan (ASMP).  

Competencies/Trg Required for the Post 

The post of 622 Sqn XO is established as a Flying (Aircrew) appointment, as authorised by HQ 2 Gp.  You are to maintain full flying qualification and currency iaw HQ 2 Gp flying regulations under my supervision. 

  • Must either have been, or currently be, a Sqn Ldr or a Flt Lt eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3393 Vol 1 and AP 7000. All Promotions will be ratified by means of a Promotion Board. If an applicant has been out of full-time military service and is applying for a post on promotion, they will also need to send their civilian appraisals or equivalent to evidence recent skills, knowledge and experience to be considered by the Promotion Board.
  • One tour minimum on RAF ATAAR Force with above average flying assessments.
  • Minimum Flt Cdr/ Acting Flt Cdr experience on the ATAAR Force.
  • Operational
  • IOD qualified.
  • Current or recently current on AT/AAR Force aircraft.
  • ICSC qualified.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undertake Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Clearance.

The closing date for applications is 3 October 2022.  Interviews will take place 10 October 2022, unless a promotion board is required.

Unless already commissioned in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be Commissioned in the RAuxAF with a liability for call-out for permanent service.

The appointment is on FTRS (LC) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 Chapter 16 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period of 4 years.

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board. Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case by case basis.

Candidates who have been out of regular or reserve service for more than 5 years may be considered for this appointment.  Prior approval must be sought from the relevant Professions Advisor to confirm current and past experience prior to being invited to interview.

Applicants of an equivalent rank from sister Services may apply but will only be accepted into the Royal Air Force Reserves if an appropriate Professions advisor can be identified to sponsor the applicant.  The relevant Profession’s advisor approval must be agreed before the interview.

Regular Service Applicants. Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.

Ex-service candidates who have been administratively discharged through the QR1027 process will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a).

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Of particular note is reference to the ‘Effect of Re-employment’ on Commutation and, for those leaving on a ‘preserved’ pension, the Resettlement Grant.

Transition between TCoS.  Personnel taking this appointment from other TCoS should consider the impact on any accrued entitlements, such as leave, resettlement etc and should seek specialist guidance where required as certain entitlements are TCoS specific and may not be retained or transferred on transition between TCoS

Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserves personnel are able to request FW arrangements with their line manager. Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT). Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

Annual Salary and Leave. Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces. Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.

Accommodation.  Personnel serving on FTRS(LC/HC)/ADC TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB. However, due to a severe shortage, it is unlikely that accommodation will be available at RAF Brize Norton.
