Subject to formal establishment, a vacancy will arise for a OF4 to serve as SO1 Modelling & Simulation Lead at IWC/CSOC/Shrivenham on FTRS Limited Commitment Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 01 Oct 2026.
Unit Function
The role of the Integrated Warfare Centre (IWC) is to optimise and adapt the current integrated force, through concepts and warfare development, to support UK and NATO joint commanders to achieve operational advantage over adversaries, across the continuum of competition. The role of the Defence Modelling and Simulation Centre (DMSC)To provide consistent, enduring, accessible, agile and adaptable Modelling & Simulation (M&S) solutions.
Position Role
Senior uniformed interface and principal military interface between DMSC and Defence, ensuring that modelling and simulation activity is aligned to operational need, translated into actionable outputs, and effectively exploited across Defence and partner communities.
Responsibilities
1. Act as the primary uniformed point of contact between DMSC and Front-Line Commands/Domains, capability programmes, and operational stakeholders.
2. Build and maintain relationships across Defence, NATO, industry, academia and OGDs, linking stakeholder engagement and delivery outcomes
3. Represent DMSC at military engagements, ensuring M&S is understood and positioned effectively
4. Support integration of UK Defence M&S activity with NATO and allied partners, ensuring interoperability and alignment with coalition approaches.
5. Translate military problems, capability gaps and operational requirements into clearly defined M&S use cases.
6. Identify where M&S can proactively provide value across Defence, understanding the military implications and requirements.
7. Align DMSC activity with Defence priorities, strategies and emerging trends/requirements.
8. Provide military insight to inform DMSC prioritisation and programme direction, and military judgement to support prioritisation of DMSC activity.
Must be an OF4 of any specialisation. OF3 applicants with a positive recommendation in their most recent annual OJAR/SJAR may be considered for the role and the award of Acting Higher Rank (AHR). It is stressed that whilst a single positive recommendation will make you eligible for consideration, your entire OJAR/SJAR dossier will be considered for AHR in line with the principles of BR3(1) Part 8 and approval is not guaranteed.
OF5 applicants, if successful, will only be paid as and wear the rank of OF4.

Experience of modelling & simulation, experimentation, or test and evaluation

Domestic
DMSC is located at Shrivenham and operates on a Mon-Fri 0800-1700 routine. Working from home will form part of a normal working pattern agreed with the 1RO, but the incumbent must be able to routinely travel to and work from Shrivenham when required. Visits to other sites in the UK and overseas will be expected.

Regular Service Applicants. Personnel currently serving in the Regular Services should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Profession and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.
Admin Discharge. Subject to sS Policies candidates may be rejected.
Pension Issues. Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Transition between TaCoS. Personnel taking this appointment from other TaCoS should consider the impact on any accrued entitlements, such as leave, resettlement etc and should seek specialist guidance where required as certain entitlements are TaCoS specific and may not be retained or transferred on transition between TaCoS.
Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserve personnel can request FW arrangements with their line manager. Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.
Annual Training / Fitness / Medical / Dental. Subject to sS policies
Annual Salary and Leave. Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published sS Regulations JSP 754. Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.
Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS TaCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if surplus accommodation is available, at entitled rates subject to sS policies.
