This is an exciting opportunity to fill a new role within a newly established Defence Intelligence (DI) Reserve Sub-Unit based at UKStratCom Chicksands on a 2-year FTRS Limited Commitment contract. The Reserve Sub-Unit provides a mechanism to retain SQEP specialist Intelligence DI operators who leave their respective Service, thus adding resilience to DI. The successful candidate requires recent and expansive specialist Intelligence experience, emotional intelligence, empathy, and people skills to undertake this highly rewarding role. Initially the role will be focussed with acting as the Sub-Unit’s Project Officer, developing its vision, concept of employment and integration with DI operational sub-units.
During the Sub-Unit’s transition to Full Operating Capability, expected during FY 2028/2029, the PSAO role will transition to being the focal point for the Sub-Unit’s Reservists. The PSAO, will be expected to be involved in all aspects of the Sub-Unit, including training, recruitment, administration and career management, as well as being responsible for its ethos, wellbeing and links to external agencies and organisations. In this, the PSAO will be expected to work closely with existing support structures within the parent unit, including, but not limited to, its RCMO, RAO and J1-9 Branches. Therefore, the incumbent must possess a myriad of skills, knowledge and characteristics, including those that would support engagement, workforce management, welfare, administration and organisation.
Integration of the DI Reserve Sub-Unit with the Regular cohort is paramount to its success so the PSAO has a significant role in ensuring that the DI Reserve Sub-Unit Reservists have the highest possible level of support and that its Permanent Staff are focussed on ensuring it occurs.
Qualifying applicants will be eligible for Recruitment and Retention Payments (Special Intelligence).
Responsibilities
The role includes, although is not limited to, the following:
- Project manager for the implementation of the specialist Intelligence DI Reserve Sub-Unit.
- Responsible to the parent-unit CO for all functional group (J1-9) matters of the specialist Intelligence DI Reserve Sub-Unit.
- Day to day supervision and management of reservist personnel of the specialist Intelligence DI Reserve Sub-unit.
- Support Operational teams in the management of commitments and mobilisation process for employment of reservist personnel.
- In collaboration with the parent-unit RCMO, support the recruitment and retention of reservists.
- Liaison and co-ordination of the employment of reserve personnel across the specialist Intelligence capability from internal and external units.
- Ensure compliance with RIPA and other government frameworks.
- Be prepared to support ad hoc short notice taskings away from home base as directed.
Accountability:
The PSAO will be accountable to OC DI Reserve Sub-Unit.

Authorities and Line Management responsibilities
- Must have served with the Regular Forces or be serving as a member of the Reserve Forces with existing specialist Intelligence SQEP
- Must be RN, Army, RAF or RM of OF-2 Rank of any Arm / Service / Specialisation / Profession / Trade.
- OF1 Rank applicants with a recommend for the next higher rank in their most recent OJAR will be considered.
- Must hold or be able to hold a Developed Vetting (DV).
- Must possess a full driving Licence.
- Knowledge of Reserve (specifically Part-Time Volunteer Reserve) policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and experience of Reserve (specifically Part-Time Volunteer Reserve) employment, mandatory training and mobilisation processes.
- Recent Service on a DI specialist Intelligence Force Element.
Selection Process
TaCoS must be established first. Applicants will undergo an initial eligibility sift. Eligible applicants will have their details forwarded to the Post Sponsor to arrange interviews.
Following interviews; the successful applicant will be informed that they are the Preferred Candidate with details being sent to the appropriate Reserves Career Management Cell who will continue the recruitment process. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly. Once the recruitment process is complete then the Preferred Candidate will be invited to take up the appointment.
