Vacancy detail

The Firefighting Instructor (FFI) is responsible for Firefighting training within MWS Phoenix Training Group (TG). The Firefighting Section comprises the staff, facilities, training equipment and policy associated with Firefighting training.  The post holder must have recent experience from serving at sea as a Senior Rating along with experience and knowledge of damage control and Firefighting. They are to be capable of undertaking divisional duties as required.

FFIs are to:

a.    Provide practical and theoretical instruction in Firefighting, working with Babcock, to ensure that students achieve the standards approved by NCHQ effectively and efficiently.

b.    Foster the morale, effectiveness and professional development of students.  

c.    Meet the targets and implement objectives laid down by the Officer Commanding Phoenix Task Group and the Officer in Charge Phoenix Task Group.

d.    Provide advice on TG policy for firefighting training.

e.    Instruct the Firefighting elements of CBRNDC courses including CCF, BSSC, ISSC, EFSSC, CBRNDC 35 and Ship Teams so that students achieve the standards approved by NCHQ.

f.    Be responsible for Health and Safety within the Firefighting training environment including the maintenance and strict application of Risk Assessments.

g.    Identify measures to improve the quality and/or efficiency of training delivery within the Firefighting Section.
    

Accountability.  

a.    The Firefighting Instructor is accountable to the Firefighting Chief Instructor for the delivery of practical and theoretical instruction. 

b.    The Firefighting Instructor is under the functional authority of the 1st Lt, HMS EXCELLENT for establishment duties including HMS BRISTOL.

c.    The Firefighting Instructor is accountable to the Firefighting Chief Instructor for all tasks not covered above.

Authority.  

The Firefighting Instructor has authority over all students in the classroom and Fire Fighting Training Units (FFTUs) during the delivery of training. They are authorised to issue Level 1 warnings to students undergoing firefighting training iaw TPS requirements.

FFI is to:

a.    Instruct firefighting courses as required by the staff loading plan produced by the Firefighting Chief Instructor.

b.      Work with Babcock operational staff to maintain the performance of the training service, providing feedback to Firefighting Warrant Officer through Firefighting Chief Instructor and the Babcock Training Operations Manager.  

c.      Work with Babcock operational staff to co-ordinate the activities of the trainees allocated, particularly regarding their conduct and safety in the practical training areas.

d.    Carry out practical training in accordance with the Quality Management System and the Safety Case.

e.    Prepare classroom and instructional material for lessons.

f.    Work as directed by FFCI when not undertaking Firefighting instructional duties.

g.    Act as a representative of Phoenix TG Firefighting Section at meetings or external training events as detailed by line management.

h.    Assist TSO in course design work as required.

i.    Undertake duties as detailed by 1st Lt HMS EXCELLENT.

j.    Undertake duties as detailed by OiC Phoenix TG.

Must be a serving Regular or Maritime Reserve OR 7  or Ex-Regular OR 7 of ANY specialisation.

The following can be gained whilst in post if not already held:

Intermediate Sea Safety Course

Advanced FF Module of 35 Course

First Aid Course - Level 2

Defence Train the Trainer (DTTT)

ME466A High Voltage Course

Applicants will undergo an initial eligibility sift. Successful applicants will have their details forwarded to the Post Sponsor to arrange interviews. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly.

Following interviews; the successful applicant will be informed that they are the Preferred Candidate with details being sent to the CM RES FTRS Cell who will continue the recruitment process. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly.

Once the recruitment process is complete then the Preferred Candidate will be invited to take up FTRS.




INITIAL COMMITMENT LENGTH WILL BE 24 MONTHS WITH POTENTIAL TO EXTEND

Eligibility for FTRS/ADC

Any member of the Maritime Volunteer Reserves (RNR, RMR) or the Royal Fleet Reserves (RFR) (Ex-Regular Reserve) may volunteer to undertake a period of FTRS/ADC. Ex-Regular personnel whose RFR liability has run out may be re-instated to take up FTRS/ADC.

Applicants undertaking a period of FTRS/ADC must be suitably qualified by rate, specialisation, qualifications and experience to fill the posts for which they apply. Applications will be accepted from reservists who hold one rate or more above or one rate only below the advertised rate. Applicants one rate below may be employed in the acting higher rate (excluding the advertised rate of WO2 or WO1) if they are suitable, qualified and meet current promotion regulations in all respects. Applicants prepared to serve in a position at a lower rate then the rate worn will be appropriate to that of the position. Exceptions will not normally be considered.

Applicants must also be medically fit to fulfil the duties which their Commitment will require them to undertake. Personnel who have been discharged P8 Permanently Unsuitable Naval Service through the MBOS and Employability Board will not be considered.

Ex-Regular Reserves other ranks of an equivalent rank from sister services may apply, however will have to transfer to the RFR and conduct a period of Marinisation if they are selected as the preferred candidate.
