Vacancy detail

A vacancy will arise for a Flight Sergeant to serve as FS Command Support Group Coordinator at HQ Air Reserves on Additional Duties Commitment (130) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 01 March 2023 (or earlier depending on candidate status. There is significant opportunity for this post to work remotely / flexibly.

FS Command Support Group is responsible to SO1 Reserves Support through SO2 BSG CSG, for optimisation of Command Support Group (CSG) output via a range of activities.  The post holder will take the lead on promoting the effective utilisation of CSG Voluntary Ex-Regular Reserves (VeRR) personnel ranging from OR6 to OF7. This will include managing effective fulfilment of Reserves Support Request and monitoring fulfilment of commitments.  This is a high-profile role, and the individual must be able to liaise effectively with senior ranks. The role is based at HQ Air Command.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Proactive coordination of Reserves Support Requests (RSR).
  • Primary POC for the CSG.
  • Working with Sponsors to identify how roles, skills and functions can be performed by VeRR.
  • Provision of support to VeRR personnel within the CSG. This Includes the coordination of recruitment, administration, and discharge of personnel.
  • Develop, collate, and maintain comprehensive databases.
  • Financial planning and management of the CSG budget.
  • Dissemination of policy updates, including future plans.
  • Staffing of CSG Casework, Certificate of Efficiency and Bounty submissions.
  • Providing education and guidance to VeRR Sponsors on Reserves employment, including Service-Leaver recruitment to VeRR.
  • Communication with and briefs to SO1 Res Support, SO2 BSG CSG, WO Res Support, the wider RPMC and Base Support Groups to ensure coordinated activity across the geographically separated units.
  • Liaison with DBS Process Teams, RAF Focal Point, Unit Staff and BSG Coords to enable successful BSG/CSG output.
  • Must either have been, or currently be, a Flight Sergeant or a Sergeant eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 2 Leaflet 560 and AP 3376 Vol 1. All Promotions will be ratified by means of a Promotion Board.
  • Strong staff skills.
  • Be able to work independently without support from subordinates and limited D&G from superiors.
  • Possess good communication skills in order to liaise with all ranks, primarily, senior military grades.
  • Possess a detailed working knowledge of Reserves TCoS.
  • Understanding of the Command Support Group concept, its policy and procedures.
  • Familiarity with Information Assurance and Data Protection processes and policy within the MOD; iaw JSPs 440/441 and AP7004.
  • Proficient digital skills, ability to exploit MS Office and familiarity with Zoom, Skype and MS Teams.

Interviews date will be dependent on whether applicants are on promotion and therefore need to be presented to the January 23 Reserves promotion board. Interviews would take place after this.  

Unless already enlisted in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be enlist in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service.

The appointment is on Addition Duties Commitment (130) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 Chapter 16 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period of 4 years.

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board.  Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case-by-case basis. Individuals who would prefer to serve on 90 RSD VeRR TCoS should make this clear in the application.

Regular Service Applicants.  Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.

Ex-service candidates who have been administratively discharged through the QR1027 process will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a)

Pension Issues. Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Of particular note is reference to the ‘Effect of Re-employment on Commutation’ and, for those leaving on a ‘preserved’ pension, the Resettlement Grant.

Transition between TCoS. Personnel taking this appointment from other TCoS should consider the impact on any accrued entitlements, such as leave, resettlement etc and should seek specialist guidance where required as certain entitlements are TCoS specific and may not be retained or transferred on transition between TCoS. 

Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserves personnel are able to request FW arrangements with their line manager.  Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT). Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS.  The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

Annual Salary and Leave.  Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces.  Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.

Accommodation.  Personnel serving on ADC TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB. However, due to a severe shortage, it is unlikely that accommodation will be available at RAF High Wycombe. Personnel serving on VeRR TCoS are not entitled to accommodation.
