Vacancy detail

A vacancy will arise for a Squadron Leader (Flying Branch) to serve as the Squadron Mentor (formerly Uncle/Aunt) at II(AC) Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth on Full Time Reserve Service (Home Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS). The proposed start date is 28 Jul 22, but may be earlier if circumstances permit.

The Squadron Mentor is responsible to Officer Commanding II(AC) Sqn for a variety of tasks to take some of the load from the Squadron Executive Officers on the Squadron. Equally, the Mentor will provide continuity for Squadron business by acting as Deputy Squadron Commander and Senior Subordinate Commander at Lossiemouth when the Squadron is deployed. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the Squadron Welfare Officer, ensuring that Squadron personnel and their families are suitably supported by the appropriate agencies
  • Development of publicity material and messages and coordination of defence engagement by publicising the Squadron’s activities nationally, locally and in internal reports
  • Acting as the Squadron point of contact for honorary members, affiliated units and the Squadron Association
  • Acting as the Squadron ambassador for all history and heritage-related business, including the management of all Squadron memorabilia
  • Ensuring that the Squadron's infrastructure is appropriately maintained and enhanced where funds exist
  • Acting as the Squadron Information Asset Custodian and ensuring compliance with the appropriate data protection policies
  • If appropriately experienced, providing supervision of flying in the role of RAF Lossiemouth Duty Commander Flying when II(AC) Squadron are rostered for the duty
  • Acting as a Station Post-Crash Management Incident Officer, including initial deployment to the scene of any incident within the RAF Lossiemouth area of responsibility
  • Mentoring the professional development of Junior Officers and personnel on the Squadron
  • Providing oversight of ceremonial events in consultation with the Sqn Warrant Officer
  • Assisting with the readiness and preparation of all Sqn personnel for operations and roles
  • Coordinating and leading hosting of official visits to the Sqn.
  • Must either have been, or currently be, a Squadron Leader (Flying Branch) or a Flight Lieutenant (Flying Branch) eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3393 Vol 1 and AP 7000. (Note: All personnel with 4 years seniority and a positive promotion recommendation on their current OJAR can be considered by a PSB)  
  • If not already qualified, the successful applicant is to undertake the Post-Crash Management Incident Officer Course within 6 months of commencing employment.
  • Experience as a Fast-Jet Squadron Flight Commander
  • Completed the Intermediate Command and Staff College (IOD4/5) course
  • Extensive staff officer experience
  • Duty Commander Flying Experience

Unless already holding a commission in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be commissioned in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service. The appointment is on FTRS (HC) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 for an initial period of up to 5 years.

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of an RAF Medical Board.  Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case by case basis.

Candidates who have been out of regular or reserve service for more than 5 years may be considered for this appointment; however, the post sponsor must gain Branch and Trade advisor approval to recruit before the candidate is invited for interview.

Regular Service Applicants. Personnel currently serving in the regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsors proposed start date, prior to applying.

Ex-service candidates who have been administratively discharged through the QR1027 process will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a).

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Additional guidance can also be found at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pensions-and-compensation-for-veterans. Of particular note is reference to the ‘Effect of Re-employment on Commutation’.

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT).  Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS.  The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

Annual Salary and Leave.  Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces.  FTRS personnel are eligible for annual leave and public holidays in accordance with AP3392 Vol 7 and JSP 760.

Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS(HC) TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB. However, due to a severe shortage, it is unlikely that accommodation will be available at RAF Lossiemouth.
