A vacancy has arisen for a Squadron Leader to serve as the Executive Officer at 607 (County of Durham) Squadron RAuxAF, RAF Leeming on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date being 15 July 2021.This date is flexible depending on the circumstances at the time of processing the selection.

607 (County of Durham) Sqn is a General Service Support Sqn and its primary role is to recruit, train and then utilise Part Time Volunteer Reservists across 7 different trades to augment and support the Royal Air Force and wider Defence. The Sqn is a Centre of Excellence for RAF Reserve Logistics Driver and Supply training. The Executive Officer manages the day-to-day business of the Sqn, leading a small team of FTRS personnel to deliver all aspects of business and training associated with the Sqn.

Responsibilities.  Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Managing the day-to-day business and output of 607 Sqn, in line with OC 607 Sqn's direction and the Sqn Management Plan.
  • Act as the deputy to the OC in his absence and keep him updated on all matters affecting the functioning and output of 607 Sqn.
  • Attend and support 607 Sqn training events and activities, as required. 
  • Oversee Sqn recruiting, media, employer engagement and community engagement activities.
  • Oversee all support of Sqn personnel and conduct governance and management checks.
  • Liaise with HQ 1 Gp Reserves, Reserves Capability, RAF Leeming personnel, Branch and Trade Advisers, RFCAs, and all other stakeholders relevant to 607 Sqn's business.
  • Contribute to the Sqn Management Plan, In-Year Delivery Plan and all other documents in the Sqn Management Documents Set. Develop strategy to ensure the future needs of the Sqn are supported.
  • Draft submissions and other reports required by Higher HQ for the OC.
  • Draft Sqn Business Cases and act as point of contact for all budgetary, infrastructure, parenting and resource issues.
  • Manage the safety, welfare and morale of all Sqn Reservists and HQ staff.
  • Act as line manager for FTRS staff and manage the day-to-day operations, output and professional development of the HQ personnel.

As an integral member of the Sqn, the post holder will be expected to work on weekend training events and participate in other Sqn events and activities as necessary. Applicants must be able to work independently and as part of a team, have outstanding communication and office skills and be computer literate.

  • Must either have been, or currently be a Squadron Leader or, a Flight Lieutenant who eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3393 Vol 1 and AP 7000. Promotion will be ratified by means of a promotion board.
  • Must have practical knowledge and skills to exploit MODNet, Microsoft Office, SharePoint and other software.
  • Must be willing to conduct flexible working to align with Part Time Volunteer Reserves (PTVR) working weekends and out of normal office working hours.
  • Must hold Security Clearance (SC).
  • Must have experience of providing support to Royal Air Force operations and/or exercises in the UK and overseas.  
  • Experience of working in a Higher HQ or as a Staff Officer in a Defence environment.
  • Experience of a period of mobilised or operational service.
  • Experience of working with RAF Reserve personnel.
  • Broad experience of the RAF, especially the branches and trades represented at 607 Sqn.
  • Experience of recruiting, training and/or co-ordinating the utility of RAF Reserves.
  • Understanding of Welfare and Care in Training.
  • Hold a current UK Cat B driving licence.

Unless already commissioned in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be commissioned in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service.

The appointment is on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 Chapter 16 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period of 5 years.

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board. Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case by case basis.

Regular Service Applicants. Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.

Ex-Service candidates who have been administratively discharged through the QR1027 process will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a).

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a Service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking Reserve Service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserves personnel are able to request FW arrangements with their line manager. Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT). Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

Annual Salary and Leave. Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the Rserve Air Forces. Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.

Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS (LC) TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB.
