Vacancy detail

A vacancy has arisen for a Chief Technician – Engineer to serve as Investigator A4 at RAF Lossiemouth on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 09 January 2023.

The AIR Safety Investigation Team (ASIT) is a geographically dispersed team of Junior Officers and SNCOs who provide an impartial investigation capability into human-factor centric air and ground safety incidents, via the delivery of Non-Statutory Inquiries (such as Air Occurrence Safety Investigations) and Local Investigations, and make recommendations to Duty Holders to prevent recurrences.  As an investigator, you will establish the facts behind an incident through the gathering of data and talking to those involved in the incident to determine the sequence of events, understand the decisions and human factor influences that led to the event, and propose to the Duty Holder (or their representatives) options to reduce recurrence.  This role requires regular interviews and discussions with RAF personnel, typically of all professions from AS1 to Wg Cdr, along with equivalent civil servants and contractors, and occasionally Army and Navy personnel. Experience as an investigator is not necessary, but applicants must be comfortable engaging with a wide range of personnel, possess excellent people skills, be intelligent to people’s emotions, have strong analytical and report writing capabilities, and confidence presenting findings to a reviewing panel.

This role requires regular travel nationwide, occasionally overseas, and sometimes at short notice. Although the post is parented by RAF Lossiemouth, the post has significant potential for remote working and variable start and finish times, underpinned by regular visits to the team HQ at RAF Cranwell. As such, the role location is open to negotiation depending on needs of the Service and individual.

The post is historically focused on aircraft engineering but application from other engineer specialisations will be considered, subject to successful post amendment where necessary. TCoS may be open to negotiation depending on needs of the Service and individual.

Specific tasks include:

  • Investigating human factor centric safety incidents to determine causes and causal factors, and producing SMART recommendations.
  • Timely production of high quality reports and presentations to Duty Holders or their representatives.
  •  Provision of on-the job training and mentoring of part-time/inexperienced Tri-Service investigators, including policy promotion with RAF Duty Holder Safety Teams.
  • Occasional membership of Occurrence Review Groups.
  • Conducting Error Management training, and Human Factors Foundation and Continuation sessions.

•    (Airmen) Must either have been, or currently be, a CHIEF TECHNICIAN / CHIEF PETTY OFFICER / STAFF SERGEANT or a SERGEANT (Engineer) eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 2 Leaflet 560 and AP 3376 Vol 1. All Promotions will be ratified by means of a Promotion Board. If an applicant has been out of full-time military service and is applying for a post on promotion, they will also need to send their civilian appraisals or equivalent to evidence recent skills, knowledge and experience to be considered by the Promotion Board.

•    Must have a sound understanding of RAF Safety management principles and policy.

•    Must have attended, or be able to attend and pass the following training courses:

o    MAA Occurrence Investigator
o    RAF Human Factors Facilitator

•    Experience conducting Occurrence Safety investigations.
•    Experience undertaking Occurrence Review Groups.
•    Have attended, or be able to attend and pass the following training courses:

o    MAA Occurrence Review Group
o    MAA Effective Error Management
