A vacancy has arisen for a Squadron Leader (Aircrew (Any)) to serve as Lightning Force Element Mentor at RAF Marham on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 01 June 2022 (or earlier, depending upon candidate status).

The Lightning Force Element Mentor will be responsible for a variety of tasks to take some of the load from the Aircrew Flight Commanders on 617 Squadron and 207 (OCU) Squadron.  Primarily, the role will provide on-station continuity for Lightning Force business by acting as Deputy Squadron Commander and Senior Subordinate Commander when required and as OIC ‘Rear Party’ during squadron deployments on operations or exercises.  The role will be primarily based at RAF Marham but may require occasional travel and nights away from station.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Acting as the 'Welfare Officer' and 'Aircrew Coach', engaging with all Squadrons within Lightning, and across the rank structure on a regular basis. Ensuring Service personnel and dependants are suitably supported by the appropriate agencies.
  •  Provision of draft comments associated with the monthly IYDP return and Sqn F540 during periods that the Sqn is deployed.
  • Responsibility for Lightning Force Element engagement (internal and external) in order to best promote the Force and Squadrons to the wider public, whilst engendering relationships with those most closely associated with the various Lightning Sqns.
  • Acting as the Lightning Force Media Officer and exploiting opportunities to promote the Squadron both locally and nationally and with the requisite approval of the Force, the Station and RAF Media and Comms. 
  • Assisting with both 617 Squadron and 207 Squadron Association activity and, where possible, in the maintenance of the Association website, including the provision of a yearly newsletter. 
  • Acting as Lightning Force point of contact for sustaining relationships with our affiliated military and civilian organisations; organising social activities and liaison visits on an annual basis. 
  • Assisting with the Readiness and Preparation of all Squadron personnel for contingent operations. 
  • The production and maintenance of a PMD programme for all Lightning Squadron and their officers and other ranks where appropriate.
  • The conduct of IOD 1-5 courses as directed by HQ AIR and JODP/ICSC for NCHQ.
  • The direction and facilitation of Force Development training; utilizing, where possible, links with the extensive history of 617/207/809 Squadrons.
  • At least one charity event a year in direct support of the 1(Fighter) Squadron affiliated charities.
  • Production and maintenance of a ‘Quality of Life’ register; delivering any feasible suggestions in a timely manner and maintaining close links with the Station Community Support team. 
  • Fulfilling the daily role of 'Duty Exec' as directed by the daily programme and OC Operations Wing. 
  • If appropriately qualified, providing supervision of flying in the role of RAF Marham Duty Commander Flying as rostered. 
  • Acting as a Post-Crash Management Incident Officer if required, including initial deployment to the scene of any incident within the RAF Marham area of responsibility. 
  • Supervising the professional development of Junior Officers across Lightning Force. 
  • Providing oversight of ceremonial events in consultation with the Sqn Warrant Officer. 
  • Taking Acting as the default visit ProjO in the first instance for any external requests.
  • Must either have been, or currently be a Squadron Leader (Aircrew Branch) or a Flight Lieutenant (Aircrew Branch) who is eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3393 Vol 1 and AP 7000. Promotion will be ratified by means of a Promotion Board. 

    If an applicant has been out of full-time military service and is applying for a post on promotion, they will also need to send their civilian appraisals or equivalent to evidence recent skills, knowledge and experience to be considered by the Promotion Board.

  • If not already qualified, the successful applicant is to undertake the Post-Crash Management Incident Officer Course within 6 months of commencing employment.
  • Extensive Flying Sqn and Staff Officer experience.
  • Ability to hold DV clearance.
  • Completed the Flight Supervisors course.
  • Experience as a Fast-Jet Squadron Flight Commander.
  • Completed IOD 4 and 5 or equivalent.
  • Media training.
  • Trauma and Risk Management (TRiM) Practitioner qualified.
  • Completed the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for the Armed Forces course.
  • Casualty Notification Officer/Visiting Officer qualified.
  • Possess good communication skills in order to undertake staff briefings to senior military levels.

Unless already commissioned in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be commissioned in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service.

The appointment is on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 Chapter 16 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period of 5 years.

Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board. Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case-by-case basis.

Candidates who have been out of regular or reserve service for more than 5 years may be considered for this appointment.  Prior approval must be sought from the relevant Professions Advisor to confirm current and past experience prior to being invited to interview.

Applicants of an equivalent rank from sister Services may apply but will only be accepted into the Royal Air Force Reserves if an appropriate Professions advisor can be identified to sponsor the applicant.  The relevant Profession’s advisor approval must be agreed before the interview.

Regular Service Applicants. Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.

Ex-service candidates who have been administratively discharged will have their applications rejected as they are not eligible to join the RAF Reserves in accordance with AP 3391 (Vol 3, Lft 207, Annex L, Para 1a).

Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Transition between TCoS.  Personnel taking this appointment from other TCoS should consider the impact on any accrued entitlements, such as leave, resettlement etc and should seek specialist guidance where required as certain entitlements are TCoS specific and may not be retained or transferred on transition between TCoS. 

Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserves personnel are able to request FW arrangements with their line manager. Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.

Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT). Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

Annual Salary and Leave. Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces. Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.

Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS(LC/HC)/ADC TCoS are eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB. However, due to a severe shortage, it is unlikely that accommodation will be available at RAF Marham.
