Primary Purpose. The AB(WS)SSM is to operate Sonar equipment to a high standard in accordance with procedures and policies dictated by current documentation and doctrine, within VERACITY, THRASHER and ALERT or any other shore trainer directed by Command.  The AB(WS)SSM is to operate the Sonar Simulation Desks within VERACITY and THRASHER.
 
Secondary Purposes.

The secondary purposes of AB(WS)SSM are:

a.    The AB(WS)SSM is to assist the CPO(WS)SSM or CPO(WS)TSM in support of SMCC as directed
b.     The AB(WS)SSM is to assist the LS(WS)SSM in the support and preparation for all training within the SCTT.
c.    To maintain all FOST(SM) WSEL equipment IAW WSEL log schedule.
d.    To conduct Duty hand and supervision suite sentry duties in Naval Base Clyde as required
e.    Ensure that the simulators are fully secured IAW FOST(SM) Security regulations on completion of training.

Principal Tasks

In Support of the Primary and Secondary Purposes.

  1. To maintain own professional knowledge at RPS level.
  2. To assist the LS(WS)SSM maintain an accurate sonar picture on the Sonar Simulation desk within the SCTTs via the Warship Signature Database in support of the training aim.
  3. To assist with training through operating all Sonar equipment in all positions in the Sound Room IAW current doctrine and as required by the training Senior Rate.
  4. To ensure that SCTTs are fully prepared for training as directed by the LS(WS)SSM
  5. To ensure that the SCTTs are fully secured on completion of training.
  6. To assist the VERACITY and THRASHER Leading Rates with daily user checks and defect reporting prior to a training period.
  7. To clean the Sound Room area before and after each training session as directed by the LS(WS)SSM.
  8. To participate in SMCC Command Briefs as directed by SMCC CO or LS(WS)SSM.

Must be a serving Regular or Maritime Reserve OR2  or Ex-Regular OR2  of  WAR SM specialisation. 

AB(WS)SSM is to have previously completed a sea assignment as an OR2 onboard a submarine and received a SJAR recommend for the FOST SM training environment.

The following competencies are aligned to this position:
   

a.    SM/AB(WS)SSM CAREER (UP610QJN)
b.    SM/NARROWBAND OPERATOR (UP616QNT)
c.    PROFESSIONAL RPS FOR ABWS(SSM).
d.    WATER SAFETY EQUIPMENT MAINTAINER/SUPERVISOR (SEA 113)  



Applicants will undergo an initial eligibility sift. Successful applicants will have their details forwarded to the Post Sponsor to arrange interviews. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly.

Following interviews; the successful applicant will be informed that they are the Preferred Candidate with details being sent to the CM RES FTRS Cell who will continue the recruitment process. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly.

Once the recruitment process is complete then the Preferred Candidate will be invited to take up FTRS.


INITIAL COMMITMENT LENGTH WILL BE 24 MONTHS WITH POTENTIAL TO EXTEND

The start date will be ASAP

This position will attract Retention and Recruitment Pay-SM

Eligibility for FTRS/ADC

Any member of the Maritime Volunteer Reserves (RNR, RMR) or the Royal Fleet Reserves (RFR) (Ex-Regular Reserve) may volunteer to undertake a period of FTRS/ADC. Ex-Regular personnel whose RFR liability has run out may be re-instated to take up FTRS/ADC.

Applicants undertaking a period of FTRS/ADC must be suitably qualified by rate, specialisation, qualifications and experience to fill the posts for which they apply. Applications will be accepted from reservists who hold one rate or more above or one rate only below the advertised rate. Applicants one rate below may be employed in the acting higher rate (excluding the advertised rate of WO2 or WO1) if they are suitable, qualified and meet current promotion regulations in all respects. Applicants prepared to serve in a position at a lower rate then the rate worn will be appropriate to that of the position. Exceptions will not normally be considered.

Applicants must also be medically fit to fulfil the duties which their Commitment will require them to undertake. Personnel who have been discharged P8 Permanently Unsuitable Naval Service through the MBOS and Employability Board will not be considered.

Ex-Regular Reserves other ranks of an equivalent rank from sister services may apply, however will have to transfer to the RFR and conduct a period of Marinisation if they are selected as the preferred candidate.
