Subject to formal establishment, a vacancy will arise for an OF4 to serve as Chief of Staff, War Development (COS WarDev) at Northwood, on either a PTVR, ADC, VERR or VTOD Terms and Conditions of Service (TaCoS), with an anticipated proposed start date of May 24. The broadest possible TaCoS are also available for all eligible candidates. 

Task requirements:  

This is a superb opportunity for an SO1 of any service or trade to gain significant experience within Defence Force Development. COS WarDev is at the heart of delivering Warfare Development for the Joint Force in the 0-5 year timeline. Cohering and coordinating between four broad portfolios, this role requires the highest quality staff officer.

90 RSD’s minimum and up to 180 RSDs maximum, pro rata, per annum, are available for the right candidate to conduct this role for up to 12 months which could be increased dependant on Regular fill of the post. It is expected to be 120 RSD’s depending on workload.

Responsibilities:

  1. Advise, shape, and enable WarDev’s role in Defence (Integrated) Force Development.
  2. Understanding and coordination of Pilar mandated and emerging outputs.
  3. Represent WarDev on internal and external Boards, Committees, Steering and Working Groups as required
  4. Management of Applied Concept and JTTP Librarys across Defence’s Joint User community
  5. Joint Warfare Development Board coordination, management, and Secretariat lead
  6. Provide central coordination and oversight of WarDev’s financial outputs
  7. Support WarDev AH’s for all J1 Org, MS and personnel reporting tasks
  8. Manage WarDev business process including JW Management Plan inputs, reporting and risk

Joint Warfare’s role is experimenting, training, and assuring the Joint Force of today; and innovating, developing and adapting the Integrated Force of tomorrow.

Directorate of Joint Warfare sits within Joint Force Development within UK Strategic Command (UKStratCom). The vision of Joint Force Development is to be the thought-leadership engine that gives UK Defence the edge on a global stage.  The role of the Directorate of Joint Warfare is to ensure that the Joint Force is ready for operations through operational level force development, military exercises, contingency reporting, and lessons learnt.

Must be an OF4 of any specialisation.

OF3 applicants with a recommend for the next higher rank in their most recent OJAR will be considered.

Must be serving as a member of the Reserve Forces or have served with the Regular or Reserve Forces.

The appointed SP will be required to work 2-3 days per week at the Joint Warfare offices in Northwood, as well as attending meetings in Main Building, Shrivenham from time to time. WFH via a MML ModNet laptop, by mutual agreement.

Dependent on the TaCoS, the appointed SP is expected to be able to claim travel and subsistence and to have access to service accommodation for assigned exercises and associated meetings when remote conferencing is not practical.
