Unit Function    

The FDev Team leads the conceptual development of RN Future Force, defining the Navy headmark beyond 30 years, interfacing across the RN to align and cohere future strategy, leads the Navy’s interface with the Defence Force Development Process, manages RN FDev, including Defence led Wargaming, and conceptual engagement with the other Front-Line Commands, allied Navies, Other Government Departments, the Maritime Enterprise, academia and think tanks and the general public; developing and coordinating corresponding Navy FDev.

Position Role    

This post will by a key team member within the FDev Team, part of the Capability and Force Development Deputy Directorate. The team will be responsible for delivering key outputs that will drive the Future Force Development of the Navy; 
a.    Developing and delivering the Royal Navy vision beyond the RN Strategy and POR, shaping and guiding current and future strategy, S&T, R&D, experimentation and investment choices. 
b.    Developing and delivering a pan-RN conceptual baseline, including engagement with DFD, oTLB strategy, Partners Across Government and international allies.
c.    Developing and delivering the RN’s Force Development activities, including Defence and Command Force Testing, Variation, Experimentation and Exploration. 
                    
Responsibilities

a.    SO2 lead for RN Wargaming Programme of Work.    
b.    Deliver RN FDev wargaming IAW the RN Wargaming PoW    
c.    Conduct International wargaming liaison and coordination with partners and allies.    
d.    Maintain the RN Wargaming Programme, including interfaces across Defence and with allies    
e.    Liaise with DFD and oTLBs to ensure that RN Force Testing, Experimentation and Exploration is as informed, collegiate, evidence-based and rigorously scrutinised as possible.    
f.    Supporting Hd FDev/FDev Team Product Owner (OF5 Hd FDev) in ensuring that RN Force Development is deliverable and meets the ambition of the Senior Leadership of the Navy and Defence.    
g.    The Develop Directorate employs agile working to deliver business outputs; as a member of a Scrum team, work in an agile way to deliver team outputs, as prioritised by the team’s Product Owner.    

  • The role will be based in NCHQ. NCHQ operate a flexible hybrid working environment.
  • Will be required to attend events/activity across the UK Defence estate on a routine basis.

Must be an OF3 of ANY specialisation. OF2 applicants with a recommend for the next higher rank in their most recent OJAR may be considered. 

OF4 applicants, if successful, will only be paid as and normally wear the rank of OF3.

Must be serving as a member of the Reserve Forces or have served with the Regular Forces.

Professional command at OF3 (sub-unit)

Previous MOD/DCMO/NCHQ experience.

Applicants will undergo an initial eligibility sift. Successful applicants will have their details forwarded to the Post Sponsor to arrange interviews. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly.

Following interviews; the successful applicant will be informed that they are the Preferred Candidate with details being sent to the CM RES FTRS Cell who will continue the recruitment process. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly.

Once the recruitment process is complete then the Preferred Candidate will be invited to take up FTRS.


INITIAL COMMITMENT LENGTH WILL BE 24 MONTHS WITH POTENTIAL TO EXTEND

NB: Where the Anticipated Start date has already passed, the start date will be ASAP


Eligibility for FTRS/ADC

Any member of the Maritime Volunteer Reserves (RNR, RMR) or the Royal Fleet Reserves (RFR) (Ex-Regular Reserve) may volunteer to undertake a period of FTRS/ADC. Ex-Regular personnel whose RFR liability has run out may be re-instated to take up FTRS/ADC.

Applicants undertaking a period of FTRS/ADC must be suitably qualified by rank, specialisation, qualifications and experience to fill the posts for which they apply. Applications will be accepted from reservists who hold one rank or more above or one rank only below the advertised rank. Applicants one rank below may be interviewed at the discretion of the Line Manager and may be employed in the acting higher rank if they are suitable, qualified and meet current promotion regulations in all respects. Applicants prepared to serve in a position at a lower rank then the rank worn will be appropriate to that of the position. Exceptions will not normally be considered.

Applicants must also be medically fit to fulfil the duties which their Commitment will require them to undertake. Personnel who have been discharged P8 permanently unsuitable Naval Service through the MBOS and Employability Board will not be considered.
