Subject to formal establishment amendment, a vacancy may arise for a Flt Lt or WO (any profession) to serve as Training Officer at 505 (Wessex) Sqn on Full Time Reserve Service (LC) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date being 01 March 2023 (or earlier, depending upon candidate status).

505 (Wessex) Sqn are an RAF Reserve General Service Support (GSS) Sqn based at RAF St Mawgan, Cornwall. The primary role of 505 Sqn is to provide fully trained personnel, of various trades, to support the RAF on operational tasks.

The successful applicant will be responsible to Officer Commanding (OC) 505 Squadron for the management, delivery and governance of all 505 Sqn training.

Responsibilities.  Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the delivery and facilitation of training activity for all 505 Sqn personnel. This is to cover Phase 1-3 training, professional military development (PMD), pre-deployment training, mandatory and miscellaneous trg and FD/APDT activities and Sqn inductions.
  • Design and manage an annual training programme in line with the Squadron Management Plan and requirements of all stakeholders.
  • Manage the 505 Sqn Training Management System, including core documents and undertake annual audit requirements.
  • Responsible for the quality and standards of training delivered to all Sqn personnel, either internally or externally. Ensure that all training is safe, effective and DSAT compliant.
  • Liaison with HQ 22 (Trg) Gp, Training Schools, Training Delivery Authorities, Branch and Trade Sponsors, HQ 2 Gp and all other stakeholders relevant to 505 Sqn's training.
  • Monitor the quality of all training and maintain/develop standards of all training staff.
  • Manage the safety & welfare of trainees and staff.
  • Ensure all trg activity complies with current policy, regulations and legislation.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations and professional development of the Training Flight.
  • Member of the 505 Sqn Executives team and deputise for the Chain of Command when required.
  • Support 505 Sqn in all tasks and activities, as required.

As an integral member of the Sqn, the post holder will be expected to work on monthly trg weekends and participate in other Sqn events and activities as necessary. Applicants must be able to work independently, and as part of a team, have effective communication and office skills and be computer literate.

  • Must either have been, or currently be, a Warrant Officer (Any) or Flight Lieutenant (Any) or a FS (Any) eligible for promotion in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 2 Leaflet 560 and AP 3376 Vol 1. All Promotions will be ratified by means of a Promotion Board.
  • Defence Trainer Course (Formally DTTT) (Phase 1 and 2).
  • DSAT Manager, DSAT Training Supervisor and/or additional DSAT qualifications.
  • Care of Trainee’s (CoT).
  • Experience delivering and managing training and working in a Defence Training Environment.
  • Must possess a good working knowledge of the RAF and RAF Reserves.
  • Must have experience of providing support to Royal Air Force operations and/or exercises in the UK and overseas (or similar experience serving with sister Services).  
  • Must have practical knowledge and skill to exploit Microsoft Office.
  • Must be willing to conduct flexible working to align with Part Time Volunteer Reserves (PTVR) working weekends, including working out of normal working hours.
  • Hold Security Clearance (SC).
      • Experience of working with RAF Reserve personnel, and/or have been a Reservist.
      • Broad experience of the RAF, especially the trades represented at 505 Sqn.
      • Familiarity with the Defence Systems Approach to Training.
      • Awareness and knowledge of JSP 822.
      • Additional training-related competencies or qualifications.
      • Understanding of Welfare and Care in Training
      • Understanding of D&I, Health and Safety, risk management and Human Factors.
      • Hold a current UK Cat B driving licence.

      The closing date for applications is 06 Jan 23 and interviews (unless prom board required) will be held shortly afterwards.

      Unless already commissioned/enlisted in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be commissioned/enlisted in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service.

      The appointment is on FTRS (LC) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 Part 1 and AP3392 Vol 7 Part 3 Chapter 2 for an initial period of up to 5 years.

      Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board.  Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case by case basis.

      Candidates who have been out of regular or reserve service for more than 5 years may be considered for this appointment.  Prior approval must be sought from the relevant Professions Advisor to confirm current and past experience prior to being invited to interview.

      Applicants of an equivalent rank from sister Services may apply but will only be accepted into the Royal Air Force Reserves if an appropriate Professions advisor can be identified to sponsor the applicant.  The relevant Profession’s advisor approval must be agreed before the interview.

      Regular Service Applicants.  Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsor’s proposed start date, prior to applying.

      Pension Issues.  Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Of particular note is reference to the ‘Effect of Re-employment’ on Commutation and, for those leaving on a ‘preserved’ pension, the Resettlement Grant. 

      Flexible Working Arrangements. In accordance with the Flexible Working (FW) Policy, Reserves personnel are able to request FW arrangements with their line manager.  Any immediate FW requirements should be agreed with the line management at the interview stage.

      Individual Reinforcement Training (IRT) (Module 1) and RAF Fitness Test (RAFFT).  Reserve personnel are required to maintain currency in IRT and the RAFFT iaw the relevant TCoS.  The successful applicant will be expected to undertake IRT and the RAFFT within 6 months of commencing employment (if required).

      Annual Salary and Leave.  Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces.  Leave entitlement is detailed in JSP 760.

      Accommodation. Personnel serving on FTRS(LC) TCoS are eligible to Single Living Accommodation (SLA) if available, at entitled rates, if serving within the Air Command TLB.
