JOMOC delivers global environmental services to UK and allied defence forces to optimise decision superiority. This will normally take the form of meteorological and oceanographic forecasts or tactical decision advice.

PURPOSE

Primary Purpose: To produce and disseminate routine meteorological and oceanographic advice, services and forecasts in support of the Fleet, Fleet Commander, PJHQ, NATO and other operations, through the analysis and interpretation of raw and computer derived HM data.

Secondary Purposes:

  • To act as the Divisional Officer to their watch (normally one Petty Officer and one   Leading Hand).
  • To co-ordinate Continuous Professional Development of their watch.

TASKS

 The Maritime Forecaster is to:

  • Act as the on-watch Maritime Forecaster at JOMOC in accordance with the published watchbill and watch routines or as directed by the Maritime Operations Officer, remaining within the confines of Northwood Headquarters for the period of each watch.        
  • Provide routine, timely, accurate and relevant HM support to the JOMOC customers in accordance with FLOOs, AWP1, JSP 465 and ATP32A and in the standard JOMOC formats.
  • Provide ad-hoc HM products and services as requested.
  • Provide Command meteorological and oceanographic briefings as required for TAPS and CTF 320/311 operations.
  • Provide support to SSMPF as requested.
  • Ensure quality control of HM products and services on their watch including those prepared by the watch ratings.
  • Supervise the work of the watch ratings.
  • Carry out briefings and presentations as required.
  • Act as Divisional Officer to the watch ratings and oversee their professional development.
  • Be responsible for the security integrity of the watch.
  • Carry out additional NAVY OPS HM Sub-Division duties as directed by JOMOC Maritime Operations Officer.

DEVELOPMENT OF STAFF

The post holder is to pay attention to the provision of suitable training for the Watch. This will include induction training, agreeing and setting individual targets, continuous professional development, conducting appraisals and obtaining feedback on the value of all training undertaken by staff.

 

Must be an OR9 - OF3 of the HM specialisation. 

OF4 applicants, if successful, will only be paid as and wear the rank of OF3.

Must be serving as a member of the Reserve Forces or have served with the Regular Forces.


Recent operational sea experience,

ITSyO trained.

Applicants will undergo an initial eligibility sift. Successful applicants will have their details forwarded to the Post Sponsor to arrange interviews. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly.

Following interviews; the successful applicant will be informed that they are the Preferred Candidate with details being sent to the CM RES FTRS Cell who will continue the recruitment process. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised accordingly.

Once the recruitment process is complete then the Preferred Candidate will be invited to take up FTRS.


INITIAL COMMITMENT LENGTH WILL BE 24 MONTHS WITH POTENTIAL TO EXTEND

Eligibility for FTRS/ADC

Any member of the Maritime Volunteer Reserves (RNR, RMR) or the Royal Fleet Reserves (RFR) (Ex-Regular Reserve) may volunteer to undertake a period of FTRS/ADC. Ex-Regular personnel whose RFR liability has run out may be re-instated to take up FTRS/ADC.

Applicants undertaking a period of FTRS/ADC must be suitably qualified by rank, specialisation, qualifications and experience to fill the posts for which they apply. Applications will be accepted from reservists who hold one rank or more above or one rank only below the advertised rank. Applicants one rank below may be employed in the acting higher rank if they are suitable, qualified and meet current promotion regulations in all respects. Applicants prepared to serve in a position at a lower rank then the rank worn will be appropriate to that of the position. Exceptions will not normally be considered.

Applicants must also be medically fit to fulfil the duties which their Commitment will require them to undertake. Personnel who have been discharged P8 permanently unsuitable Naval Service through the MBOS and Employability Board will not be considered.
